Additional discounts are offered to students who also make hotel reservations at the Palmer House under the 5ICCH block or students who reside in the Chicago area.

Student Volunteers

Student volunteers may receive complimentary registration to the 5th International Congress on Construction History.  For more information about becoming a student volunteer, contact Melanie Feerst at [email protected].

Eligibility:

  1. Must be a full-time student (undergraduate or graduate student) in Historic Preservation, Architecture, Interior Architecture or Engineering at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, or the University of Illinois Chicago.
  2. Must volunteer 10 hours of time before or during the Congress.

Stipends for All Student Speakers - DEADLINE EXPIRED

Applications for Student Stipends are now closed.  Assistance has been provided to 31 students speakers with funding for this purpose provided by the Construction History Society of America, our affiliated Societies in the United Kingdom, France and Germany, and by our sponsors.


Students from Germany, Austria or Switzerland - DEADLINE EXPIRED

The Gesellschaft für Bautechnikgesschichte, the German affiliate of the Construction History Society, has generously offered student stipends of 500€ each for three students or PhD candidates from Germany, Austria or Switzerland who would like to attend the Congress.  Students residing in these countries may apply directly to Gesellschaft für Bautechnikgesschichte for financial assistance to attend the Congress.  The deadline for the application has passed


Accommodations

Palmer House Hilton Hotel

The venue of the Congress is the Palmer House Hilton Hotel. The Palmer House is the oldest continuously operated hotel in the United States, having opened first in 1871. It was rebuilt in 1875 following the great fire and rebuilt again in 1925 to designs by Holabird & Roche. The hotel recently underwent a thorough restoration, including the hotel’s famed Peacock doors, the Emipre Room, the Grand Ballroom, and the Grand Lobby, whose ceiling has twenty-one painted panels with scenes from Greek mythology. Hotel guests will have complementary access to the on-site fitness center, the swimming pool, and a connectivity station. The hotel is located on E. Monroe Street within the downtown Loop area.

Hostelling International - Chicago

Students who would like more economical accommodations may make reservations at Hostelling International - Chicago.  The hostel has no curfew, and has a large self-service kitchen, a library, internet access, on-site laundry, and a café.  The hostel also offers local discounts for all hostel guests.
